Dermal Fillers

Facial contouring and rejuvenation

Whether you are seeking to enhance your facial features by emphasising contours or improving facial structure or whether you are looking for a refreshed, more youthful look volume-replacing dermal filler can help.

Dr Neale uses Hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers which are the most common type of filler used in the UK. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring complex sugar molecule which is found throughout nature. 50% of our body’s HA is found in the skin where it plays an important structural and hydrating role. Unfortunately, as we age, production of HA along with collagen and elastin, two other key structural components of our skin and soft tissues, naturally decline leading to the visible signs of aging including loss of skin quality, hydration and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

In addition to aging changes in the skin, the underlying muscle, soft tissue and bone also undergo changes leading to volume redistribution and a change in facial contour. We can use dermal fillers, as part of a holistic, personalised treatment plan to enhance or restore volume, often alongside other treatment modalities to achieve an optimal, harmonious and balanced result.

Dermal fillers are applied using an injection and can be used in a number of different facial areas including the cheeks, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, smoker’s lines, chin and jawline.

Following a initial consultation with Dr Neale, he will create a personalised treatment plan for you to understand which treatments are required to achieve your aesthetic goal.

FAQs

+ Am I a suitable candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Pregnancy and breast-feeding are absolute contraindications. We would also avoid offering this treatment to women who are trying to conceive. Treatment is also contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Patients with infection or inflammation at the proposed site of injection
  • Patients with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to dermal fillers.
  • Anyone who is allergic to bee or wasp stings may be sensitive to the HA dermal filler dissolving agent (hyaluronidase). Hyaluronidase is only used rarely in the event that dermal filler requires removal. Dr Neale can discuss this further with you if you do have an allergy to bees or wasps.
  • Patients with an existing permanent implant or previous facial surgery or trauma.
  • Patients who are prone to lumpy or raised (keloid/hypertrophic) scars.
  • Certain blood clotting disorders such as haemophilia and thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • Certain medication such as immunosuppressive medication or anticancer treatments which may increase susceptibility to infections and foreign body reactions.

Cold sores are not a contraindication unless present at the time of treatment. Cold sores can sometimes be triggered by dermal filler treatment in the area where you are typically affected by them. If you are prone to cold sores, Dr Neale may suggest taking a course of antiviral treatment before having dermal fillers.

+ I don’t want to look unnatural, is that possible?

Yes, Dr Neale will discuss with you a personalised treatment plan with an emphasis on subtle enhancement or rejuvenation.

+ Are Dermal fillers painful?

Dermal Filler treatments may cause some mild discomfort. The filler itself contains a local anaesthetic and additional local anaesthetic cream or injections can also be used.

+ Are there any side-effects?

As with all medical and cosmetic procedures, side-effects and complications can happen with dermal fillers. This is why it is important to ensure your treatment is provided by an adequately trained and experienced medical professional who is also skilled at recognising and treating complications.

The vast majority of side-effects and complications are mild and self-limiting. Common side-effects include pain and tenderness, swelling, redness and bruising. Less common complications include:

  • Lumps which may be due to a collection of filler or oedema. Oedema will typically resolve spontaneously over 2-3 weeks. Lumps due to filler can be managed with massage at your 2 week review appointment.
  • Asymmetry- while we aim to correct asymmetry, it is not always possible to correct all asymmetry and some residual asymmetry may remain following treatment.

+ Rare complications include:

  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction is extremely rare.
  • Vascular occlusion is caused by partial or complete compression or blockage of a blood vessel caused either by a blood clot or Dermal filler. This is again extremely rare.

+ What precautions do I need to take following my treatment?

Avoid touching the treatment areas, applying make-up or having a spray tan for at least 6 hours after your treatment. This is in order to reduce the risk of infection. You can cleanse your face in the evening.

+ When can I exercise after treatment?

We generally advise avoiding strenuous exercise or temperature extremes (including sunbeds, saunas and steam rooms) for 48 hours after treatment or until any swelling as resolved.
